What is it about numbers that has made them an object of fascination and study for thousands of years? Perhaps it is because numbers appear to be the closest thing we have to a universal language. Many will argue that our ancestors learned how to count before they had learned how to use language. Numbers are, by their very nature, objective – there is no such thing as a “good” or “bad” number — which is why they were the language of science as practiced by the ancient philosophers, and continue to be used in this fashion today.
